Employee Training Opportunities

Why Training
Matters

Training isn't just a checkbox — it's how we keep pace with our growth, protect the organization, and develop the people who carry our company forward.

Guiding Principle
"Be as proactive as possible to have capacity when we need to be reactive."
01
Pace the Organization

Training keeps us moving at the speed of the enterprise and positions us for the growth ahead.

  • Momentum of the enterprise
  • Growth goals
  • Legacy of training resources
  • Active operations
  • Future operations
02
Protect the Organization

Effective training closes gaps before they become incidents. The difference between being lucky and being protected.

  • Balance of perfection versus no structure
  • Are we lucky — or are we protected?
  • Where is the risk, where are the gaps?
03
Develop the Organization

A structured training system builds the enterprise knowledge and experience that carries us forward.

  • Enterprise knowledge and experience
  • What do departments or team members not know?
  • What is identified to grow
  • Need of structured training system
"Be as proactive as possible to have capacity when we need to be reactive."
A Shared Platform · Built for Every Quanta Employee
What Is The Academy?

Your Platform
for Professional
Growth

The Academy is our platform for recognizing employee development as a key element of organizational success. It combines internal resources and external training solutions to identify, implement, and track training across the company.

Previously known as the Underground Academy, the platform has evolved into The Academy — a scalable, multi-company initiative shared by Underground Construction, PAR West, and Island Mechanical, built for every employee at every level.

This website serves as an interactive resource the teams can poke around and learn from — for internal employees and external partners like PAR, replacing static PDFs with a living hub that explains what The Academy is and how it operates.

Inspired by the Academy Toolkit

This site follows the model of the Academy Toolkit — a partner-facing resource designed to be shared beyond internal SharePoint so anyone — employees from any Op Unit, partners, or external stakeholders — can access it directly.

What Is The Academy's Goal?

To equip all employees with the tools, knowledge, and skills needed to consistently perform their jobs safely and efficiently — and to be accountable for following best practices and standard procedures.

The Academy serves as a key driver of the PMO West Strategy, reinforcing cultural alignment, transparency, and readiness for sustainable growth across all operating units — including partners at PAR.

Cross-Divisional Learning

The Academy facilitates learning across departments — not just within them. Teams like Accounting attend modules outside their area to better understand how the organization operates, improving communication and collaboration company-wide.

Training Formats

How The Academy
Delivers Training

The Academy uses a dual-format approach — combining instructor-led, in-person sessions with flexible eLearning — so every employee can engage in the way that works best for their role and schedule.

Instructor-Led Training
The primary training format at The Academy. In-person sessions are led by internal subject matter experts from across the participating Op Units — facilitating real discussion, Q&A, and hands-on application of skills.
Sessions are open to all staff in the relevant role, with a Teams component available for remote and field employees who cannot attend in person.
eLearning (SCORM)
Self-paced online courses hosted directly in the LMS — accessible anytime, from any device. eLearning modules include onboarding content, safety orientations, compliance training, and external partner courses.
The Academy continues to invest in and expand its library of branded internal eLearning content, alongside curated external courses from HCSS, AGC, Open Sesame, and UCON.
External Partner Training
The Academy integrates training from trusted external partners — including AGC of America, AGC of California, United Contractors (UCON), and Quanta Services — all accessible through the LMS catalog.
External trainings are curated, approved, and organized by department within the LMS, ensuring employees can always find relevant content without searching across multiple platforms.
Field Access — Did You Know?
The LMS Is Available
in the Field
Foremen and field staff with company iPads can access the Academy LMS directly through Safari — no desktop or office computer required. This capability is currently underutilized and represents a major opportunity to accelerate field training and onboarding.

How Training Gets Built

Module Lifecycle

Every Academy module follows a consistent five-stage process — from identifying a training need all the way through post-training follow-up and LMS documentation. This ensures quality, consistency, and accountability at every step.

Training Need Identified
Champion: Anyone
  • Training need is identified by any team member
  • Training is reviewed for feasibility within the Academy framework
Training Module Created
Champion: Director+ with HR
  • Training module is created using the standard Academy template
  • Curriculum approved by Director or above
Facilitator Assigned
Champion: HR
  • A subject matter expert (mentor) is assigned to deliver the training
  • HR supports consistency of training materials
Training Scheduled & Conducted
Champion: HR & Facilitator
  • HR works with teams and facilitator to schedule the session
  • Facilitator leads the training module
Post Training Follow-Up
Champion: HR
  • Notes documented and distributed
  • Attendance recorded in the Academy LMS
  • Metrics shared with Directors and Executives
Operational Facilitators

All Academy modules are facilitated by internal operational subject matter experts, managed and coordinated by HR — ensuring trainings are grounded in real-world Op Unit practices.

Consistent Module Format

Every module is built using the Academy's standard template — covering objectives (Who, What, Where, When, Why, How), mentor background, procedures, resources, lessons learned, attachments, and follow-up.

Academy Ambassador Program

The Academy
Ambassadors

An Academy Ambassador is a respected leader in each division who helps connect The Academy to real operations — promoting development, reinforcing standards, and bringing field feedback back to leadership.

Not trainers.
Not compliance officers.
Respected operators
who champion development.
In construction, culture spreads laterally — not top-down. PMs trust other PMs. Superintendents trust seasoned supers. Field leaders listen to people who've done the work. That's exactly why the Ambassador model works.
Why It Makes Sense in Construction
Reduces "corporate initiative fatigue" by putting trusted faces on the program
Builds credibility with field staff who may be skeptical of top-down mandates
Speeds up buy-in across crews, divisions, and leadership levels
Creates ownership at the division level — not just compliance from the top
Time Commitment
30–60 minutes per month · Quarterly alignment with Academy leadership · Occasional feedback surveys. If it feels like a second job, it will fail.
What Ambassadors Actually Do
A. Communication
Introduce new Academy modules, explain why they matter, clarify expectations, and reduce confusion — so employees know what's available and why it's relevant to their work.
B. Reinforcement
Mention Academy tools in team meetings, encourage course completion, and share wins or improvements from training. Consistent reinforcement is how culture gets built.
C. Feedback Loop
Collect real input from the field: What's working? What's not? What's confusing? What should be built next? Ambassadors channel operational reality back to the Academy team.
D. Modeling Behavior
They complete the modules. They apply the tools. They talk about them. Culture spreads through visible adoption by people others respect — not through mandates.
Where Ambassadors Sit in the Org
Option A — Division-Based
One Ambassador per division (Gas, Electric, Boring, Civil, etc.) representing Academy initiatives within their operational group.
Option B — Role-Based
Ambassadors by role type: Project Management, Field Supervision, Estimating, Safety — aligning training directly with job function.
Option C — Hybrid (Most Effective)
One Ambassador per division plus one per role type — delivering operational coverage, technical alignment, and cultural reinforcement simultaneously.
Financial Impact — Why Leadership Should Care
Ambassadors Protect
Margin Through
Better Execution
Higher training completion rates
Faster adoption of standards
Reduced rework across projects
Better margin protection per division
More consistent GP across the company
In construction, even a 1% improvement in gross margin can mean millions. Ambassadors protect that margin through consistent, division-level execution of standards.
Recognition & Incentives
Recognition at leadership meetings
Visibility to executives
Career advancement signal
Positions them as future leaders
Field Feedback — Active Priorities
Adjusting module scheduling to better accommodate field crew availability
Tailoring content to reflect real on-the-job scenarios and jobsite context
Expanding iPad and mobile LMS access awareness among foremen
Reducing reliance on Outlook invites by driving direct LMS registration

The Academy Role Matrix Is a Living Document
Launched on July 1, 2023, The Academy has developed 245 modules across all departments and career paths, with 111 implemented to date and 10,884 completed courses across both ILT and eLearning formats. The matrix applies to all departments and career paths — not only PMO. It is the primary tracking tool used to identify, implement, and track training across the entire organization. For the full, current matrix contact the Academy Board at [email protected].
Academy Resources

Partner Network

The Academy extends beyond the Op Units — connecting every employee and external partner to industry-leading training through a trusted network of organizations.

Quanta Services

As the parent company of all three Op Units, Quanta Services provides additional training and educational support — leveraging the full Quanta family of companies and their shared resources.

AGC of America & California

Associated General Contractors of America and AGC of California offer courses for all levels of construction industry employees — from field craft to executive leadership.

United Contractors (UCON)

United Contractors serves union contractors in California with education and training, including the Project Labor Agreements module and a robust virtual course calendar.

For PAR Partners
Academy Access
for External Partners

This website is specifically designed to help external partners — including those at PAR — understand what The Academy is, how it works, and how to access training resources. Many PAR partners have not yet participated in Academy courses, and this hub is the starting point.

The Academy will be used to distribute all required trainings and core competencies for PMO West — ensuring regular delivery, identifying training gaps, and making resources consistently accessible to every partner in the program.

Powered by The Academy
PMO West
Strategy

The PMO Strategy establishes a unified and scalable framework to support California Operating Units. The Academy serves as a key driver — equipping teams with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to execute aligned processes effectively.

PMO West Dashboard Integration

Academy training content and core competencies are being integrated into the PMO West dashboard — expanding visibility across all PMO West supervision, not just individual divisions. Additional training resources are also being incorporated in collaboration with the broader PMO West team.
